- Explorer Administration Kit:

-
-
- OVERVIEW DOCUMENTS
- ==================
-
- The following documents provide overviews of IEAK features and functionality.
- They are located in the root of the IEAK compact disc.
-
- Isp.doc For Internet service providers (ISPs)
-
- Icp.doc For independent content providers (ICPs)
-
- Corpadmn.doc For corporate administrators
-
-
- GENERAL SETUP REQUIREMENTS
- ==========================
-
- A large amount of scratch disk space is required for processing. Before
- beginning the IEAK wizard, calculate how much disk space is required for
- all components you want to install. Then make sure you have four times
- that amount of space free on both your destination drive and temp drive.
- Note that if the destination drive is the same as the temp drive, eight
- times the space is required.
-
- If you are running Microsoft Windows NT(R), make sure your pagefile is 40 MB
- or greater. (On the end user's computer, make sure the pagefile is 30 MB or
- greater.)
-
- Note
- * If you encounter any file-copying errors while the wizard is running,
- or if the Msie30.exe self-extracting package does not function properly,
- free some disk space, and then restart the wizard.
-
-
- If you are creating the IEAK on a local drive, run ScanDisk on that drive.
- To run ScanDisk, click the Start button, click Run, type SCANDISK
- and then click OK.
-
-
- NOTE TO ISP'S SUPPORTING WINDOWS 3.1
- ====================================
-
- INS files sent to Internet Explorer 2.1 for Windows 3.1 must have
- MS-DOS(R)-style file names no longer than 7.3 (not 8.3).
-
-
- AFTER YOU RUN THE IEAK WIZARD
- =============================
-
- The wizard creates customized versions of Internet Explorer and copies them
- to separate folders, depending on the types of distribution media you
- selected at the beginning of the wizard.
-
- CD DISTRIBUTION
- ---------------
- The CD folder contains the files for burning onto a CD-ROM. To replicate a
- CD-ROM, point your CD-burning software at this folder. Make sure the files
- and folders at the root of this folder are copied to the root of the CD-ROM.
-
- FLOPPY DISK DISTRIBUTION
- ------------------------
- The Floppy folder contains the files for floppy disks. Copy all of the files
- from each subfolder to a single master floppy disk.
-
- ONLINE DISTRIBUTION
- -------------------
- The Download folder contains configuration files for downloading Internet
- Explorer. You can post the files in this folder as a package for online
- distribution.
-
-
- CREATING CUSTOMIZED BACKGROUNDS AND BUTTONS FOR THE CD AUTORUN PROGRAM
- ======================================================================
-
- You can customize the CD AutoRun program with your own background and
- buttons. To do this, create the bitmaps by using a graphics program, such
- as Microsoft Paint, and then specify their location in the wizard.
-
- In order for your customized background and buttons to work properly, make
- sure that both the background and the button files are optimized to the same
- 256-color identity palette. Instructions for how to do this are included at
- the end of this section. In addition, your custom buttons must be the same
- size and shape (square) as those specified in the Template.bmp file included
- in the Custbtns\Template folder on the IEAK compact disc.
-
- Notes
- * The custom backgrounds and buttons appear only on computers with
- 256-color (8-bit) display capabilities. On computers with 16-color
- (4-bit) display capabilities, a standard low-resolution background
- bitmap and button set will appear.
-
- * The following instructions assume that you are starting with 24-bit
- RGB bitmap files. If your file is not a 24-bit RGB bitmap, you must
- convert it first.
-
-
- To convert 24-bit images to a common 256-color identity palette
- ---------------------------------------------------------------
-
- 1. In your graphics program, create a working file for your palette.
- To do this, paste both your background and your button file into
- a single file. Make sure to paste the files side by side, not
- overlapping.
- 2. Save the file as Palette.bmp.
- 3. In BitEdit, open Palette.bmp. BitEdit prompts you to reduce the
- colors to 236 colors. Keep this number in the edit field.
- 4. On the Options menu, click Palette. PalEdit starts, displaying the
- palette to which your file has been indexed.
- 5. On the Palette menu, click Make Identity Palette. PalEdit will add 20
- Windows colors to the first and last 10 indices of the palette.
- 6. Save the palette as Palette.pal.
- 7. Switch to BitEdit, and open your original background file.
- 8. Save the file with a different name, such as Bgnew.bmp.
- 9. Open the renamed background file.
- 10. On the Options menu, click Color Reduction.
- 11. Click Palette File, and then click Palette.pal. BitEdit then
- dithers your background to the common palette.
- 12. Save this file.
- 13. Follow steps 7 through 12 for the button file.
-
- Both your background and your buttons will then be indexed to the same
- palette.
-
- ANIMATED LOGO SUPPORT IN THE IEAK WIZARD
- ========================================
-
- The IEAK kit wizard now enables you to customize the animated logo that is
- displayed in the upper right-hand corner of the toolbar when the browser
- is actively loading content from the Web. Previously only the static logo
- was available for customization. If you choose to replace the logo, you
- need to supply large and small versions of your customized animation in
- bitmap form. The bitmap must contain a vertical stack of animation cell
- images that follow these Internet Explorer animation rules:
-
- * Your animation palette can contain only 256 colors.
- * Each animation cell must be 38 by 38 pixels, or 26 by 26 pixels, for large
- and small animation images respectively.
- * Cells 1 through 4 are lead-in cells that are played when Internet Explorer
- begins to browse.
- * Cells 5 through X, where X is the total number of cells, loop until the
- browse operation is complete.
-
- You can find examples of these animations by looking at \docs\bitmaps\win95\26x26A.bmp
- and 38x38A.bmp in the updated IEAK directory.
-
- NOTE ABOUT FAVORITES
- ====================
-
- If you choose to add customized shortcuts to the Favorites folder, note that
- if the user already has a shortcut with the same name, the old shortcut will
- not be overwritten.
-
- For example, suppose a user already has a version of Internet Explorer and
- a shortcut in their Favorites folder called "My Home Page" pointing to
- http://homepage.com. If the user then installs your customized version of
- the browser, and the default Favorites folder contains a shortcut with the
- name My Home Page, the old shortcut will be preserved.
